Job Purpose
WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment WAS ND v6.1 vacancy has become available within the Middleware Support team to provide implementation, maintenance and the provision of 2nd level 24 x 7 support for WAS production solutions employed within distributed applications and systems.
WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment WAS ND v6.1 will require technical leadership of a team and be expected to mentor and train junior members of the team. The Senior WAS Administrator will also be expected to adopt a consultative approach with Middleware Engineering as to best practice in the design and implementation of new services.

Main Responsibilities
Play a lead role in the administration, installation and maintenance of WAS solutions, ensuring that all changes are performed professionally and with minimal operational impact. This will be achieved by developing and enforcing standards for management capabilities within the distributed environment. Contribute to support initiatives by providing 24 x 7 hour technical callout facility for those systems that the team administers, maintains or provides support to. Provide technical support for problem diagnosis for WAS liaising with other departments where necessary, to ensure all problems are resolved professionally with minimal operational or service impact. Proactively ensure WAS estate is offering required High Levels of Availability and performing optimally and are able to ensure the achievement of Service Level expectations through accurate monitoring and automation capabilities. Work with internal developers, hardware/software vendors and integrators to assimilate knowledge of new systems being developed or deployed. Ensure all change and request work assigned to the team is performed in a timely manner per the scripts. Where possible, identify and work to resolve potential problems prior to implementation. Monitor and report on the status of projects/meetings attended by the Middleware Support team, liaising with the project groups to ensure that the relevant and up-to-date information is made available to Production Operations. Provide a monthly management report on change and problem activity. Demonstrate the use of tracking and trending of WAS related problems to ensure failures do not recur. Keep abreast of developments and emerging WAS technology throughout the IT industry by means of networking, membership of specialist groups and ongoing training. Act as delegate to Middleware Manager. Direct work activity of outsourced staff. Mentor and coach junior staff.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential skills:
Commercial IT exposure in a large systems (150+) Server environment. Significant working knowledge with the following WebSphere skills is required for the role: WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment (WAS ND) v6.1.xIBM HTTP Server (HIS) v6.1.xInstallation, patching, configuring, problem determination. Keystore management - CSR, importing, receiving etcISA, AST, working with IBM on PMRs etcJDK 1.5 and J2EE 1.4.x or above Scripting with Jython and ksh. Basic networking concepts (TCP/IP, host file, Virtual Hosts and HTTP traffic)Practical experience of other Middleware technologies UNIX administration skills on AIX, Solaris would be advantageous. Problem diagnosis and resolutions skills in a business critical 24 x 7 Service Support environment are essential. Knowledge of MS Office suite. Familiarisation with ITIL principles and preferably ISEB accredited. Experience of problem and change control management processes including use of applications such as Remedy. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Independent problem solving skills, demonstrating initiative and self-motivation. Good written and verbal communication skills. Self motivated, able to work on own initiative Flexible, dedicated team worker with the ability to work in isolation as required.
Desirable skills:
The following experience would be beneficial: Knowledge of Site Minder and LDAPOmegamon(ITM)/ITCAM WebSphere MQ (WMQ) v6.1.x (desirable)HACMP, MQ Cluster, MQ API Exits XML language.
